THE PERFECT WEDDING, RIGHT NOW

Wendy Lippman • Sep 04, 2020

Eager to tie the knot? Don’t wait. Now more than ever, we need to feel the joy, love, and support that a wedding brings. Here are suggestions for safe, celebratory weddings you can plan and have now.

The Micro-Wedding

Plan a bite-sized version of a traditional wedding and celebrate with 50 or fewer of your closest friends and family. Usually, a shorter timeline (3 hours instead of 5), these intimate events still include a ceremony and celebration with flowers, cake, music, and more, and can be designed to your liking.

Bonuses:
  • More time to spend with each of your guests
  • A more affordable solution or an opportunity to allocate money to the things you care about the most (you no longer have 150 people coming, so you can spend more money on your dress!)
  • Less to plan and manage which can mean less stress
  • For the eco-conscious, a smaller carbon footprint
Minimonies

These are mini ceremonies often held with ten or fewer people and an officiant on the original, now postponed wedding date. They can be a prequel for a larger wedding or reception but allow you and your partner to commit to one another in the loving presence of those nearest and dearest to you.

Bonuses:
  • Limited guests allow for the proper social distancing
  • Can be affordable and planned quickly, using things you’ve committed to (your dress) and relationships you’ve already formed (with the baker for a mini-cake or the florist for a bouquet)
  • Reinforces your love, support, and happiness during difficult times
Elopement

The most intimate of weddings, an elopement is about you and your partner. Often considered the rebellious or under-the-radar thing to do, this type of wedding allows you the most freedom and, in the time of COVID, the most security.

Bonuses:
  • Can be done in-the-moment with minimal-to-no-planning
  • Can be affordable
  • Safe, just the two of you, possibly a few family members or friends (but not necessary), and a masked, socially distanced officiant and witness
Sequel Weddings

Now that you’ve had a minimony or eloped, you can plan a follow-up celebration and schedule it 6-months or a year or more from now. And it can be anything you want it to be, the traditional wedding you always dreamed of or just a relaxed party with family and friends.

Bonuses:
  • Time to plan and think about or re-think your needs, values, wants, and even your budget
  • Something to look forward to!
Things to consider and incorporate into any of our suggested COVID wedding options:

  • Location, location, location — outdoor venues have increased in popularity due to their safety, be sure to know any indoor restrictions when planning
  • Single-serve everything — drinks including mini-bottles of wine and water, pre-platted food, disposable cameras, sanitizer, and packets of hand wipes
  • Safety and social distancing — provide wedding-themed face masks for all; carefully consider the configuration of chairs, tables, the dance floor, and dance areas and organize them around friend and family groups and for your older, potentially at risk guests; highly encourage all guests (and on-site vendors) to get COVID tested before attending and have some fun with this on your wedding Instagram or website!
  • This is a special event, about you and for you — don’t forget to personalize whenever possible and make your wedding ceremony and celebration something that has meaning for you and will be memorable

Although the pandemic continues, Tlaquepaque is moving forward with the planning for this year's Day of the Dead festivities. We are evaluating the current health situtation daily and value the safety of our guests, merchants, and community. We ask that you check our website at tlaq.com/events before October 27 to monitor updates. Tlaquepaque is an open-air venue; however, all attendees will need to manage social distancing and masking accordingly.

Events at Tlaquepaque are made all the more memorable by the event planning and food the guests enjoy. Whether attending an engagement party or wedding, the beauty of Tlaquepaque’s architecture and grounds is enhanced when the guest’s culinary experience is as artful and delightful as the surroundings. Here are a couple of our exclusive vendors who make that possible.

Tlaquepaque Arts and Shopping Village has provided the perfect setting for south of the border fiestas, festivals, and cultural extravaganzas for the last four decades. Unfortunately, this year we are dealing with the unprecedented COVID pandemic and must pause our highly attended Day of the Dead celebration. There's good news though! Our annual Marigold Mural project is back this year with a NEW SAFE AND EXCITING FORMAT. Join us on Wednesday, November 4 through Saturday, November 7, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Calle Independencia. This project is unique to Tlaquepaque and an artful way to remember your loved ones. The artist Lovejoy will be in attendance again this year, handing out markers as she guides and answers questions regarding the mural and your contributions. Face masks and sanitizer will also be available for those who need them.

Bursts of color from fragrant seasonal blossoms, sycamores reaching up to the sky, beautifully landscaped plazas and pathways — these are some of the first things that captivate visitors when they come to Tlaquepaque Arts and Shopping Village. Although we are currently closed, our incredible crew continues to work to ensure this Arizona state gem is ready and flourishing when we reopen.
