Day of the Dead and the Mural Project

Now in its eighth year, Dia de los Muertos has become one of Tlaquepaque's most exciting events. It celebrates the timeless Mexican tradition that honors friends and family who have passed on. Things get underway on Tuesday October 30 with the Marigold Mural Project, where everyone is encouraged to paint his or her tributes and remembrances on a 26-foot long community mural. Mural Painting: Tuesday October 30th - Saturday November 3rd. Paints and brushes are provided.

The patios, streets and fountains of Tlaquepaque will be vibrantly transformed with multi-colored ritual objects, abundant offerings or ofrendas. The Dia de los Muertos celebration culminates with a full day of music, food, fire dancing, and more on Saturday November 3rd from 4:00pm-8:00pm. Everyone is encouraged to place personal objects, photos, and candles celebrating the lives of loved ones on a beautiful altars made ready for offerings, or ofrenda. Candles will be available for purchase to use on the altars. There will be fun activities for the kids including free sugar skull making and fantastic face painting artists working in Day-of-the-Dead motifs. Inspired Day of the Dead costumes are strongly encouraged! "El Mercado" will feature agua frescas and fresh churros, traditional Day-of-the-Dead bread, cookies, Taquitos and hot chocolate. There will be several artisan booths vending Day-of-the-Dead merchandise as well.
